$5 Liberty Half Eagle

Known as a "Half Eagle," this was the first gold coin actually struck by the United States government. First minted in 1839 the $5 Liberty Head gold coin design was popular until 1929 when minting of all $5 gold U.S. coins ended. The $5 Liberty Head gold coin is the only gold series in our Nation's History minted at 7 different United States Mint branches! The design was created by Christian Gobrecht and features a Liberty head encircled by 13 stars representing the first 13 colonies. The reverse has a majestic eagle with outstretched wings. In 1866 the motto "In God We Trust" was added above the head of the eagle in a flowing banner.
