$20 Saint Gaudens

In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt summoned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the country’s coinage in the likeness of the coins of ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy. St. Gaudens produced a double eagle with a standing figure of ‘Liberty’ on the obverse and a flying eagle on the reverse. Sadly, Saint-Gaudens died on August 3, 1907, without seeing his magnificent coin enter into circulation. The first production pieces were made with high relief. But after striking just 11,250, Mint officials substituted new dies with the modified, lower relief, and these remained in use through the end of the series. As one would expect, the original 1907 High Relief $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coins immediately became prized as collector’s items.
